Top performers in Saab-produced rally
The Swedish car company Saab is not only held up in the Frankfurt-based auto show for introducing the Turbo X, but also had its hands full with the racing events. The County Saab Scottish Rally Championship just ended last Monday on the Merrick Forest Stages.
Still considered as a newbie in the rally world, Scott Murray had a fruitful second-overall finish in the Saab-sponsored rally championship. Geared in his Peugeot 205 Gti, Murray and co-driver David O’Brien breezed past his opponents for a podium finish.
“I was amazed at the level of grip the forest tracks down here have, and the car ran well for the first time,” said Murray.
Murray’s co-driver O’Brien has also asserted that his partner could still still manage get the title in the Country Saab Scottish Rally Championship if Scott remained driving confidence.
“We had to back off towards the end because we thought the drive shafts could fail if we pushed too hard, so who knows where we could have finished,” said O’Brien.
On the other hand, Murray’s father, Gordon, managed to bag a career-high 10th place finish in the Swedish-produced rally. The senior Murray and co-driver Corrine Yeaman, who were driving a Subaru Impreza, experienced an excellent run to become part of the top ten for the first time.
“I don’t know why things went so well for us,” said Gordon Murray at the finish of the championship’s seventh round. “This is the first time I have ever finished in the top ten on a Scottish Championship round.”
The automaker behind this rally championship, Saab, is considered to be one of the established-car companies in Europe. One of the Saab parts popularly linked to the company is the turbocharged engines that is remarkably lighter and small, but manages to produce up to 280-horsepower.
